The 5 Most Influential Social Media Campaigns That Broke the Internet

As a social media manager, you’ve probably had an innocent client ask, “can you make this go viral?” Insert laugh/crying emoji. Because we know going viral isn’t as simple as flipping a switch, I feel ecstatic for companies when they get it right. Today, we’re highlighting 5 social media campaigns that took the meaning of ‘viral’ to a whole new level.

#ShareACoke - Coca Cola

When it comes to captivating the global audience, few can hold a candle to Coca Cola. With the #ShareACoke campaign, they went for the heart, printing cans and bottles with popular names and prompting consumers to 'share a Coke.' It was personal, it was shareable, and it hit the sweet spot - sparking widespread engagement across all social media platforms. We all wanted a Coke with our name on it, and the Internet couldn't get enough. Sweet, fizzy, and revolutionary (although, let’s be honest, I’m still mad they didn’t make one with my name on it).

The Ice Bucket Challenge - ALS Association

Remember when everyone from your next-door neighbour to A-list celebrities were dousing themselves in icy water? The Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS was not just a viral sensation, it was a ground-breaking fundraiser. Raising awareness about ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), the challenge proved the power of social media for social good. It wasn't just about the fun and games - it raised over $115 million for the ALS Association. And I still remember it, even though I was in the middle of acne, braces, and high school drama at the time. Which really, is the true marker of viral IMO.

#DoveRealBeauty - Dove

Dove took the Internet by storm with their poignant and powerful #DoveRealBeauty campaign. Breaking the stereotypical beauty norms, Dove promoted body positivity and self-love. The campaign featured real women with diverse body types and sparked a global conversation about beauty standards. Dove’s campaign not only elevated the brand but also sparked a global conversation on inclusivity and self-acceptance. Heartfelt and empowering, it was Internet gold.

#LikeAGirl - Always

The personal hygiene brand, Always, struck a chord with millions by transforming the phrase "like a girl" from an insult into an empowering message. The #LikeAGirl campaign highlighted the strength, determination, and resilience of girls around the world, inspiring a shift in the perception of the phrase. It wasn't just a campaign; it was a powerful movement, amplified by the far-reaching arms of social media. Let’s give them a hand for marketing #LikeAGirl (wink).

#DreamCrazier - Nike

In 2021, Nike stirred hearts and broke the Internet with their game-changing #DreamCrazier campaign. Launched during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, this empowering campaign celebrated female athletes who shattered the 'crazy' stereotype and blazed their trail in the sports world.
Narrated by the legendary Serena Williams, the campaign video showcased the inspiring journeys of various female athletes who fought against prejudices to make their mark. It was an intense, goosebump-inducing call to "Show them what crazy can do!". The Internet responded with a resounding cheer. The hashtag #DreamCrazier flooded social media platforms with people sharing their 'crazy' dreams and achievements, bringing attention to the untapped potential of female athletes worldwide.
